About

Katia Shabanova (b. 1988, Voronezh, Russia) is a contemporary visual artist living and working in Valencia, Spain, since 2022. She works with paper, watercolour, pointed pen and video performance, exploring language, ownership, vulnerability, control and the instability of meaning. In her work, handwriting is guided and pressed into being, then allowed to blur, fragment and dissolve.

Her practice moves between the intimate scale of works on paper and larger collaborative installations and performances, in which sheets of paper are exposed to rain, fire and other external forces. A background in linguistics underlies a sustained inquiry into what language can, and cannot, hold. Her work has been shown in Valencia and Málaga, Spain.

Her works are held in private collections in Germany, Spain, Portugal, England, the United States and Russia.
